PES Won Mekong Delta Agricultural Museum Competition

PES-Architects participated in the competition of Planning Concept and Architectural Design of the Mekong Delta Agricultural Museum this July. The competition was held by Vietnamese officials including the People's Committee of Vinh Long Province and the Vietnam Association of Architects. The organizing committee received 50 applications for the competition and invited 10 organizations to proceed to the second round of the competition. Recently, the organizing committee announced the results of the competition. No first prize was awarded, while PES Architects Ltd and the local Vietnamese design company NVD and Partners stood out and won the highest honor of the second prize.

Design concept of the Mekong Delta Agricultural Museum

The design for the Mekong Delta Agricultural Museum in Vinh Long aims to function as a cultural driver and landmark building in the Mekong Delta area, promoting the thousand-year history of agriculture in the region. In addition to its museum functions, the complex will operate as a local cultural living room, attracting a broad audience through cultural education, seminars, exhibitions and cafés. The 15,000 m2 building is designed as a flexible, contemporary culture and museum centre that is timeless, easily accessible and allows for a variety of uses. The museum’s design is inspired by the agricultural landscapes and terrain of the Mekong Delta area, while also paying homage to the vernacular architecture and handcraft tradition in Vinh Long. The theme of weaving runs throughout the design, reflecting the local ecosystem of landscapes which, when viewed from above, appears as a woven carpet assembled out of different crops and materials, deeply rooted in tradition and culture.

The museum’s design is inspired by the landscapes and terrain of the Mekong Delta area. The design finds resonance from the vernacular architecture as well as the handcraft tradition in Vinh Long. The theme of weaving heavily influenced the design. It is based on the beautiful local ecosystem of landscapes which, when viewed from above, appear like a woven carpet, assembled out of different crops, different materials – but deeply rooted in tradition and culture. The museum program is divided into several different pavilions, allowing for a more human scale and appearance that find its pair from the vernacular architecture in the area. These pavilions are placed in the landscape in a village-like arrangement, creating a matrix of indoor and exterior spaces, similar to the weaving quality of the landscape.

The architectural vision is to serve this local identity and to enhance and strengthen the qualities of a rural environment, by placing the museum building carefully into this rich and delicate context, by surrounding the museum with these very landscapes, by creating a minimal threshold between the exhibition spaces and the actively farmed fields and gardens surrounding and infiltrating the museum.

The gabled roof represents a universal rural and farm-house image The design pays homage to this simplicity and translates it into a contemporary and functional piece of architecture. The village-like arrangement of spaces also allows for a single story solution, which is intended to enhance the close relationship of the museum spaces to the surrounding gardens. The museum becomes the literal space in between the landscape carpet and the folded roofs.

The museum generally can be described as a composition of seven elements:

1. The water.  We reestablished an array of canals, linking the water body to the museum spaces.

2. The carpet. Fields and gardens surround and infiltrate the museum spaces.

3. The bridges.  Exteriors and Interiors are connected functionally and playfully.

4. The courtyards are creating moments of rest, of quietness and privacy.

5. The walls. Massive wall structures are guiding through the museum spaces and are providing a structural and technical backbone.  Cuts frame views into the landscapes

6. Glass surfaces.   The landscapes are invited into the museum, and the threshold between interior and exteriors spaces is broken by floor to ceiling high glass surfaces.

7. The roof.  This main architectural element provides the image of the building being the functionally protective element.

The exhibition rooms are arranged forming a diverse exhibition route, always near the vegetation level, close to the exhibition substance, almost as if the real exhibition is the landscape surrounding and infiltrating our building, and the exhibits are telling the story of its cultivation, in the spirit of the project motto ”Thuan Thien” – “harmony with nature”.

We imagine that the maintenance and cultivation of the museum gardens and water channels should remain fully in the hands of the local community.  This museum should become a place where local culture is meeting the visitors actively and lively.

The technical solutions are equally connected to the local context; the roofs and walls will block the sun without disturbing the important spatial connections between the interior and the exterior forming a passive energy saving element. The large glass surfaces who’s primary function is to frame the landscapes surrounding the building, at the same time provide for valuable daylight, also contribute to the energy saving concept. At the same, the architecture ensures that no direct daylight will enter the museum spaces disturbingly.

The museum spaces will be cooled mechanically, in combination with natural and inexpensive cooling methods; the plantation and water channels will create cool zones around the building, which will provide pleasant outdoor areas, but are also a perfect source for pre-cooled fresh air intake. The massive brick walls will function as cooling energy storage masses, using energy free night time cooling technology to contribute to pre-cooling the intake air, and to radiate cooling energy naturally into the museum spaces. Additionally, we propose to use geothermal and/or river water enhanced cooling systems to further cut the energy and CO2 footprint.

The proposal is designed in dialogue with nature and culture, but also planned to functionally connect two important neighbors, the (Nam Ku Khoi Nghia) Park in the south and the memorial in the east. We believe that the museum will become a good neighbor in the community, and form an inviting and welcoming beacon of activity and culture in the heart of Vinh Long.

This project demonstrates PES-Architects’ ongoing interest for the creation of buildings that exist in harmony with their surroundings. We are driven by the idea of rediscovery of natural vernacular materials and solutions specific to the context, and their reintroduction to the contemporary construction – creating a bridge between the past and the present. We hope that the building, together with its cultural content, will enlighten the everyday and bring joy to the people of Vinh Long for decades to come.
