Grand Opening held in Nanchang Poly Grand Theatre

The Nanchang Poly Grand Theatre, designed by PES-Architects, opened grandly on September 30, 2024 amid great anticipation. The opening attracted audiences from all walks of life in Nanchang and received great acclaim.

Following an international design competition win in 2021, PES-Architects was commissioned to design the Nanchang Poly Grand Theatre in China. The project aims to function as a landmark building for the new area of South New City, situated by the beautiful Jiulong Lake. The project will function as a local cultural living room. The building has been designed as a flexible, contemporary culture center that is timeless, easily accessible and allows for a variety of uses and users.

PES-Architects’ winning proposal takes inspiration from the thousand’s years of history of ceramics in China, wrapping the building in a translucid ceramic veil. Natural Materials, ceramics and bamboo, are extensively used both in the exterior and interior surfaces of the building and form the principal materials in expressing architectural intent. Jiulong Ceramics, type of translucid ceramic art specific to the area, formed the principal source of inspiration for the façade expression of the project. PES has developed the architectural and interior design of the Theatre.

“Our vision was to create a versatile, communal cultural campus that blends into both the urban environment and the lakeside landscape. The building has been well-received by the public, and I’m extremely proud of the result and our team’s achievement,” says Tuomas Silvennoinen, Chair of PES-Architects and chief designer of the project.

Functional sculpture

The 45 000m2 building is composed of three functional volumes; a 1600-seat opera house, a 450-seat multifunctional hall and culture center, linked together by a daylight lit central passage that traverses the project, connecting to the neighboring Jiulong lake park in the north, and the future shopping district in the south. Commercial and public functions are arranged along this passage on the ground level and practice and administrative spaces on higher levels. Objective has been to emulate the feeling of a traditional village street, with functions visible and accessible also to the occasional passersby. The resulting building volume is wrapped by an extensive, innovative cable suspended ceramic veil, creating the enigmatic and peaceful exterior architecture of the project.

Ceramics

Ceramic is used as the project’s main material due to its significance in the historical context of the area. The project expands PES-Architects interest to natural vernacular materials, previously extensively explored in the 2018 Fuzhou Strait culture and Art Center. PES-Architects worked with advanced structural modelling to design the unique translucid, cable suspended ceramic exterior of the building. This structural solution allowed for the daring curvature of the building exterior elevations, while preserving total visual lightness. Terracotta surfaces, together with the legendary “China White” ceramic louvers, form the principal cladding material of the building exterior and interior. All façades are clad with white ceramic louvres, while the central passage traversing the building showcase terra-cotta in various colors, producing a contrast between the exterior and interior.

Bamboo

The interior surfaces of the opera hall and multifunction hall are clad with undulating bamboo panels. Inspired by the waves of the nearby Jiulong lake, and further developed through extensive studies carried out with the acousticians, two types of acoustic surfaces were developed. Strand woven undulating dark stained bamboo surfaces from the organic, liquid shapes that characterize the principal opera hall, while the multifunction hall is clad with lighter color faceted waves. Both surfaces are adaptable to the topographical surfaces that are required to achieve high quality acoustics, as well as the visual language of the design, thus marrying functionality and aesthetics.

The Multipurpose Hall is designed for a 450 seat audience.  The walls are clad with light bamboo louvers, shaped according to the acoustic needs. The roof is equipped with a flexible cable net ceiling to enable a flexible usage of lighting and other technical equipment.

The majestic volume of the Grand Theater, the veil-like ceramic facade and the elegant bamboo interior decoration are the elements that the audience could not stop praising. Especially at night, the lights inside the theater are bright, yet the light through the ceramic blinds is rather soft, giving people a warm atmosphere. The dreamlike night view of the Grand Theater attracts countless people to stop on their way and take pictures.

The grand opening was performed by famous conductor Yu Long, soprano Wang Lida, pianist Kong Xiangdong, the China Philharmonic Orchestra and the China Broadcasting Chorus. The wonderful acoustic design of the main theater enabled the music to be perfectly transmitted to the audience, increasing the appeal of the performance.

This opening performance is also the prelude of the theater’s opening season. In the next three months, Nanchang Poly Grand Theater will launch dozens of high-quality performances by presented by both domestic and international performers. Allowing Nanchang citizens to enjoy various cultural performances in the theater just meets the designer’s expectations for Nanchang Grand Theater.

“The Nanchang Grand Theatre exemplifies our commitment to designing functional, aesthetically high-quality and timeless performing art centres. We aim to continually explore new ways to integrate natural, vernacular materials into large cultural projects, creating a bridge between the past and the present. The balance between acoustics, form, function, and materials in the Nanchang opera hall has been honed to perfection, drawing from our previous experience. We hope the building and its cultural offerings will enrich the lives of Nanchang’s residents for decades to come,” says Jyri Eskola, Partner and Development Director at PES-Shanghai and vice chief designer of the project.

The opening concert was attended by PES-Architects’ core design team from Helsinki and Shanghai. Major designers were interviewed by Finnish and Chinese media on the opening day.
