PES-Architects (Finland), in collaboration with NDV & Partners (Vietnam) were awarded in the design competition for the Mekong Delta Agricultural Museum in Vinh Long, Vietnam. Serving as a cultural driver and landmark, the museum celebrates the thousand-year agricultural heritage of the Mekong Delta while functioning as a local cultural hub. The building is a flexible, contemporary culture and museum centre that is timeless, easily accessible, and allows for a variety of uses and users.
Drawing inspiration from the Mekong Delta landscapes, vernacular architecture as well as the handcraft tradition in Vinh Long, the design was heavily influenced by the theme of weaving, reflecting the region’s agricultural mosaic when viewed from above. The museum programme features several separate pavilions, allowing for a more human scale and appearance that finds its pair in the vernacular architecture of the region. The pavilions are placed in the landscape in a village-like layout, creating a matrix of indoor and exterior spaces resembling the woven quality of the landscape.
The architectural vision emphasis a minimal threshold between the exhibition spaces and the actively farmed fields and gardens surrounding them. The gabled roof evokes a classic rural farmhouse aesthetic while translating this simplicity into a contemporary and functional piece of architecture. The museum becomes the literal space in between the landscape carpet and the folded roofs.
The exhibition rooms are designed to create a diverse route that integrates closely with the surrounding landscape, reflecting the project motto "Thuan Thien" – "harmony with nature". The maintenance and cultivation of the museum gardens and water channels is planned to remain fully in the hands of the local community. The museum should become a place where local culture meets the visitors actively and vibrantly.
The technical solutions are equally rooted in the local context, with roofs and walls designed to block sunlight while preserving connections between interior and exterior spaces, contributing to energy savings. Large glass surfaces frame the surrounding landscapes, providing valuable daylight without directly intruding into the museum spaces.
The museum areas will be mechanically cooled, supplemented by natural cooling methods such as plantations and water channels. Massive brick walls will serve as energy storage, using night cooling technology to cool intake air and radiate energy into museum spaces. Geothermal and river water systems are proposed to reduce energy use and the CO2 footprint.
The project seeks to connect with nature and culture while linking the Nam Ki Khoi Nghia Park and a nearby memorial. We envision the museum as a welcoming hub of activity and culture in Vinh Long.
