PES Architects designed the Finland National Pavilion at the recent Sustainable Design Summit, and together with seven other firms they curated exhibition that showcased practices and cutting-edge concepts of sustainable design in the field of architecture and design.

Finland National Pavilion is inspired by Design District Helsinki. The two walls resemble an abstract street façade, with various openings interpreting the wide range of display windows of the design shops on both sides of the streets. The small window shelves on the outer wall attract the viewer's attention, and at the same time lead the eyes into the "interior", and with this curiosity they enter the interior through the large door opening to get a glimpse of what is going on inside. The holes on the interior walls are of different sizes and shades to capacity multiple purposes. The small niches are for displaying objects, with a tv screen embedded in it to show promotion footages; An opening in the centre is just big enough for people to sit down comfortably and relax; the largest opening contains a counter, where coffee and promotional materials are served during the exhibition, and the curtains on either side open up to provide storage space, which can be accessed through a hidden door at the back.

The Finland National Pavilion exemplifies carbon recycling by reusing materials from the very beginning of the design process. The pavilion, which participated in Design Shanghai in June, was designed to be assembled so that many of the materials could be dismantled and retained for the Sustainable Design Summit. The non-reusable parts, mainly the timber frameworks, will be kept for subsequent exhibitions or processed into fuel to join the carbon cycle.

"The Sustainable Design Summit was held from 21st to 23rd September at the Beijing Exhibition Centre. Nearly 70 global brands in the field of sustainability participated in the summit, and a number of globally renowned designers and architects attended to delivered speeches or participated in seminars, conveying the concept of sustainable development to more than 1,000 visitors.

At this very year of Finland and China trade relations 70 years, the Embassy of the Republic of Finland in Beijing, the Consulate General of Finland in Shanghai and the Finnish National Agency for the Promotion of Business (FNAP) fully supported and coordinated the completion of the project.

In 2023, the year of "carbon neutrality", PES is participating with its sustainable design strategy, conveying the Finnish design philosophy of peace, nature and friendliness, and always welcoming like-minded people to build a better society.
